Episode 5

Currently on Mallory Rock...

Gwen determined that Reverend Reaver was at a Rocksteady meeting when Beth was murdered, so he couldn't have been her killer.

In an unsettling turn, Gwen receives a threatening voicemail from an unknown number. The killer is on to her. With only four suspects remaining, the end of this investigation is in sight...

Hints

Star Map

  • Do you have any other documents with constellations on them (this episode or previous)?
  • Maybe the flashlight Gwen gave you could shed some light on this document?
  • While Ursa Major is made of holes, there are 3 larger holes forming a triangle. There are 3 similar stars depicted on the vote record in Episode 4.
  • The illustrations are really nice on this document. Is that a lighthouse?
  • Lighthouses don't lay flat; they stand straight up.
  • What does that Latin phrase translate to?

Suspect Elimination

  • Gwen has given you a photo that was taken the night Beth died.
  • The photo of the whiteboard that Gwen put on the desktop has some fake names. Recognize any?
  • Didn't Sam mention something about taking risks in a previous episode?
  • Did Joey have any thoughts on taking risks?
  • Restaurants will sometimes advertise their hours of operation on napkins.

Reveals

Star Map

  • The Navigators Club vote record and the two handwritten notes from Episode 4 each have constellations on them. Each constellation represents an individual in the Navigators Club.
  • Shining a light on the star map will project the Ursa Major constellation onto the vote record.
  • Projecting the points that form the triangle on the star map to align with the 3 points that form a triangle on the vote record will properly align the two documents.
  • The correct orientation and angle of the star map can be achieved by standing by the lighthouse illustration found on the star map on top of the ocean waves illustration found on the vote record at a 90-degree angle.
  • AUDENTES FORTUNA IUVAT translates to: "Fortune favors the bold." This phrase indicates that when light is projected upon a bolded star on the vote record, that individual is voting "Yes" with their constellation.
  • It should look like this:

Suspect Elimination

  • The texts and photo Gwen receives from her friend provide a record of individuals (with fake names) who were at The Rock Lounge the night Beth died.
  • Joey Hendricks acknowledges his relationship to the fake name "Albin Risk" in his trauma worksheet. Sam alludes to risk in her coded message to Joey and "Risk Taker" is engraved on her necklace from Episode 2. Joey Hendricks uses the fake name "Albin Risk".
  • The whiteboard photo shows one of the "top tippers" of the night was "Albinilla". There are multiple comments sarcastically referring to Albinilla as being "risky". Further, the comments suggest Albinilla has been at The Rock Lounge "in the corner since opening".
  • The bar napkin that Jordan Woodard wrote on is from The Rock Lounge and features the back bar opening at 9:00 PM.
  • The wall clock in the whiteboard photo shows the time being 9:53 PM.
  • Joey Hendricks, referred to as "Albinilla" on the whiteboard, was at The Rock Lounge from 9:00 PM to 9:53 PM the night Beth died. His location would not allow him to be at the Vanishing Beach to murder Beth. Joey Hendricks is eliminated as a suspect. Open the Contact shortcut and send a new message to Gwen with the subject line CLEARED. In the body of the message, type Joey Hendricks.

[EXT. MARINER'S LODGE POOL]

[Phil is sitting in front of the pool, exaggerating her breathing to calm her nerves. Beat. She looks at the camera and claps.]

Phil: Looking for a place to relax after a long week at work? Get a room at the Mariner's Lodge Hotel and you'll have access to our gated, twenty-four hour community pool and ho-

[An obnoxious ringtone cuts Phil off. Phil scoffs, focuses on Jordan off-screen, and snaps her fingers to get his attention.]

Phil: Hey! Excuse me? Are you serious?

[The ringing stops.]

Jordan (O.S): -Come on, I got it.

[Phil makes a shooing motion toward the right off-screen.]

Phil: We're recording -

Jordan (O.S.): It's done, alright?

[Phil scoffs and gives the cameraman an annoyed look. After a beat, she clears her throat and focuses back on the camera. She takes a deep breath and smiles.]

  • A client called to complain about a quote for the third time in one week.
  • The client must think I'm stupid. Like I would change the price just because he called and cried about it. I felt like crap because even this guy, this random nobody, thought I was easy to walk over. And even when I did give in, he didn't even say thank you. He didn't even consider it a nice thing to do. He acted like it's what I was supposed to do, which is great, because what I was supposed to do was charge him full price. Now dad and Chris are going to be on my case about it. I can already hear them when they find out. Dad will say I should have just referred the client to him, and Chris will imply that I cost the company more money than it makes in a year or something like that. Which is stupid, because they're probably right. I should have passed the client to dad, but I didn't want him to think I couldn't handle it. He'll say he knows I can handle it and he knows I can

  • do more, but he never actually shows it. He always keeps me out of business talks. Everything he says comes in layers, and I never know which one is the real meaning. It's really frustrating, and it makes me feel like he doesn't actually value me as a son or as a business partner.
  • Beth let Ruby have a sleepover in the den without talking to me about it first. They both assumed I wouldn't have an opinion, but actually there was a game I was looking forward to that night, and I wanted to use the big screen. It wouldn't have been a problem if they had just talked to me first.
  • Beth KNOWS I hate this. We've talked about it several times, and yet she still continues to do things without asking or even telling me. Sure, I don't mind handing over the den to Ruby. That's not the problem. I can always record the game and watch it later. I just wanted to be involved in the decision making. I felt angry and hurt that she would make a family decision behind my back, again. Even if I don't say anything or if I say something stupid, at least give me the opportunity. It's like when the Navigators decide on things. They act like we're one big family on the outside, but I always end up feeling left out when I'm with them. Someone will fill me in on what's been going on, but only after the fact. I feel like such a loser just sitting there twiddling my thumbs, waiting for someone to catch me up to speed.
  • Then to make things worse, Beth decided we had to talk about it on our dinner date, in front of tons of people. I couldn't deal with it. I didn't want to talk about it, so I left. I went out to try to make myself feel better, but I wish I hadn't. It only made things at home worse. Albin Risk has always been my escape, but now I feel like that name's just a shadow over me. Beth apologized when I got home, but I didn't say anything back. I just don't feel like she actually understands what the problem is and it hurts every time she acts like she does. It's not that she doesn't listen or that she doesn't want to listen. She just has her own ideas about how certain things are supposed to go. She has this idea of me as a good person, but it's just not true. And I can't tell her that, so I just don't say anything, and that just makes her more sad.

Solution

  • The star map is a tool used by the Navigators Club to interpret the vote record. By aligning the star map properly, you can shine the flashlight to project the Ursa Major constellation onto the vote record. The stars projected from Ursa Major will highlight individual stars from each constellation on the vote record. If a bolded star from an individual constellation on the vote record is illuminated, this indicates a "Yes" vote. Any other star illuminated indicates a "No" vote.
  • The whiteboard photo supplied by Gwen's friend, combined with Joey Hendrick's trauma worksheet and the bar napkin prove that Joey Hendricks was at The Rock Lounge on the night and during the time Beth was murdered, so Joey Hendricks is eliminated as a suspect.
  • To complete this episode, open the Contact shortcut on the virtual desktop and send a new message to Gwen with the subject line CLEARED. In the body of the message, type Joey Hendricks.
