Currently on Mallory Rock...
Still shaken by the mysterious voicemail, Gwen finds a small message bottle on her car windshield with a note inside. She's sure it's from the killer.
She tracks down the unknown number and discovers the call came from Anchor Management - a company involved with the bridge collapse Beth was investigating. Gwen is sure Jordan has something to do with Anchor Management, but isn't sure how to prove it.
Although Jordan remains a suspect, Beth's husband, Joey, is in the clear.
With three suspects left and threats continuing to mount against her, Gwen is ready to name the killer.
Hints
Geological Survey
- The handwritten note looks to be encoded in a similar fashion as notes you've already seen.
- Of the remaining suspects, who is in the Navigators Club?
- The vote record from Episode 4 may come in handy here.
- Can you identify which constellations are assigned to Martin and Jordan?
- Does Martin or Jordan have a symbol or image he associates with?
- Who killed Medusa?
- If the shift starts to look strange, it could be revealing a new code beginning.
- Can you find "Precept Eight"?
- The investigation guide could be of use here.
- Double the encoding, double the fun!
- This map looks older than some others you have.
- Compare maps to see if there are any differences.
Good Fences Monthly Digest
- People can be really cranky on social media.
- Will TJ Richards ever get any sleep?
- When did the fireworks testing occur?
- Which suspect talked about the fireworks testing in their recorded conversation?
Jordan's Interview
- Jordan is a rude individual - there's nothing more rude than taking a phone call in the middle of a conversation.
- Have you heard that ringtone before?
Martin and Jody Photograph
- Jody mentioned a product in her recorded conversation with Gwen - do you see it in this photo?
- Jody mentioned the product is often advertised in The Lantern Magazine.
- What strength of TerraDorm is in the photograph?
Martin's Study Photograph
- Gwen took this quick photo. See anything that doesn't belong?
- According to some on Good Fences, Mallory Rock has a vandalism problem.
Mermaid
- Who gave this to Gwen? Did they say anything about it?
- It looks like the mermaid is supposed to be holding something.
- When detailing her feelings about mermaids in the recorded conversation, Jody uses specific language that you've seen before.
Who's the killer?
- Of the last three suspects, consider their motive, opportunity, and means.
- It seems like each suspect could have a motive. Which suspect do you feel had the strongest motive to murder Beth? Have you discovered any evidence to support this theory?
- Does each suspect have an alibi? Have you discovered any evidence to prove or disprove a suspect's previously stated whereabouts?
- How did Beth's murder happen? Checking the autopsy from Episode 2 might be helpful.
- Can you determine the murder weapon? Do you have any evidence that shows a suspect having access to this weapon?
Reveals
Geological Survey
- The encoded handwritten note in the top corner is a shift cipher.
- Martin and Jordan are each in the Navigators Club. You have seen before how members of the Navigators Club encode secret notes.
- Jordan's business card and website logo feature a snake. Martin's coin that Gwen stole features an image of Medusa with a sword laid across her throat.
- Perseus killed Medusa.
- Jordan's constellation is Serpens Caput, which is found on the Episode 4 vote record to display 8 stars. Martin's constellation is Perseus, which is found on the vote record to contain 12 stars.
- Beginning the shift using 12 will reveal that Martin is the author of the handwritten notes.
- Precept 8 can be found in the Mallory Rock notebook in Episode 1 and reads: "Caesaris finis est initium alterius." The member list from Episode 4 translates this to: "Caesar's end is another's beginning."
- The shift changes with the last word in the first line. From context clues, you know that the last word is most likely "beginning".
- By checking the investigator guide on the desktop, you can find the other encoding method used in addition to the shift of 12. Atbash is being used after the entire message has been shifted. Atbash is based on the beginning and the end of the alphabet.
- By comparing the geological survey and the bridge review from Episode 5, you can identify the inconsistency concerning "Woodard's Strange", the peninsula on the southwest corner of the island. Where the geological survey lists this area as most likely to have or verified to have karst in its bedrock, the bridge review lists Woodard's Strand as "extremely stable".
Good Fences Monthly Digest
- TJ Richards will not stop complaining about sleep.
- The post made by TJ Richards, along with its comments, reveals that fireworks were tested between 9 PM and 10 PM. Multiple accounts reveal that Beth was murdered the night of the fireworks testing, but this is the first time we see exactly what time the testing occurred.
- Jody spoke about the timing of the firework testing in her recorded conversation with Gwen.
- The timing of the fireworks testing is key to apply the final suspects' alibis and reported timelines.
Jordan's Interview
- Jordan's ringtone for Martin can be heard during his recorded conversation with Gwen and during the hotel video Gwen put on the desktop from the night Beth was murdered.
Martin and Jody Photograph
- TerraDorm sleep aid is the product found in Martin and Jody's photograph.
- The purple bottle, shown in Martin and Jody's home, is the concentrated version of TerraDorm, which is advertised in The Lantern Magazine in Episode 1 and is mentioned by Jody in the recorded conversation with Gwen.
Martin's Study Photograph
- There is a wooden board in Martin's study that looks out of place.
- This board looks to be from a sign.
- There is a Good Fences post specifically about this missing board. The location of this sign is the Vanishing Beach and was first noticed messing "a week before the Lighthouse Festival".
Mermaid
- Jody gave this mermaid to Gwen and mentioned it in their recorded conversation.
- The small message bottle found on Gwen's car fits in the mermaid's arms.
- Jody was the sender of the message in the bottle, and she tries to express to Gwen that her intent was a well-intentioned warning, not a threat.
Who's the killer?
- There is evidence that Beth stumbled upon corruption and cover-up concerning who was responsible for the bridge accident.
- Martin was directly involved with the bridge accident. There is evidence that Martin did not want a bridge to the mainland; Martin was involved in selecting the location for the failed bridge, and there is evidence that he had prior knowledge that the building site would fail, as there is a discrepancy between the geological survey and the bridge review at Woodard's Strand.
-
The decoded handwritten note in the top corner of the geological survey is proven to be Martin's as it uses his 12-star shift. The decoded message -
- Precept Eight. Caesar's end is another's beginning.
Your land, insurance
Jody signs everything
The greater good is often unpleasant
As EM said, ad astra per aspera
- reveals Martin is writing to Jordan and is planning the site for the bridge project to fail.
- Precept Eight. Caesar's end is another's beginning.
-
Martin's alibi is uncorroborated, as Jody admits to being asleep. Martin's self-reported timeline is proven false by Jody, as she reports not hearing the fireworks, meaning she was asleep before 9:00 PM. Jody claimed Martin left the house at 9:30 PM.
-
The autopsy reveals the dimensions of the head wound found on Beth: 1.27 centimeters high by 3.81 centimeters wide.
-
A Good Fences post details the missing board from the sign located near the Vanishing Beach. The sign is described as a 2x4 piece of lumber.
-
The autopsy lists the head wound to have been caused by a square object. The dimensions and shape of the wound fall within the range of a corner of a 2x4.
-
Martin is the suspect who has evidenced motive, has a disproved alibi, and is proved to have in his possession the probable murder weapon. Martin is the killer. Open the Contact shortcut and send a new message to Gwen with the subject line SOLVED. In the body of the message, type Martin Hendricks.

Jody Pocket Interview
[6.3 INT. JODY AND MARTIN'S HOUSE - DAY]
[Gwen is recording Jody on her phone, which is hidden in her pocket. The recording picks up mid-conversation.]
[There is shuffling in Gwen's pocket.]
Jody: - she's my granddaughter. I'm doing - It's like, it's like there's this -
Gwen: I know. I - I'm not talking forever, okay? I just would like to spend the day with her, just, you know, every now and then.
Jody: Look, just talk to Marty. I mean, he can explain it better than I can.
Gwen: All right.
Jody: Can I get you some tea?
Gwen: No, I'm fine.
Jody: Well, I'll make some for me, if you don't mind.
[Cabinets open; containers and spoons rustle.]
Jody: Just talk to Marty, okay?
Gwen: Actually, he told me to, uh - eh wants me to stop by later. I don't know why.
Jody: Well, he's at the office all day. I just do the paperwork, so I - I hardly ever go in. Are you sure you don't want any?
Gwen: I'm fine. (beat) All right, I'll have some if you're making it.
Jody: No trouble. We've got... Earl Gray. And English Breakfast, Apple Spice, Chamomile...
Gwen: Apple Spice.
Jody: Lemongrass, Oolong -
Gwen: Apple Spice is fine.
Jody: Oh, it's a little old. Lavender, Ginger? (beat) Okay, suit yourself. Apple Spice comin' up.
Gwen: Thanks.
[Jody pours the water and turns on the electric kettle.]
Jody: How's your, what - what do you call it, your investigation going? Any news?
Gwen: Not really.
Jody: No surprise there.
Gwen: But, uh, I would like to ask you about that night, if that's okay.
Jody: (beat) I barely remember it, but sure.
Gwen: You said you were home. Is that right? You went to bed around 9:30?
Jody: Oh, heck if I know. Have - have you been reading those report thingies?
Gwen: It's public record.
Jody (insincere): No stone unturned, huh? (chuckles) Good for you. Well, if that's what I said, then I guess that must be right. It sounds right. I don't - I don't know. (a bubbly attempt to change the subject) This kettle is amazing. I got it at the, um -
Gwen: And you said you took - you took some medicine beforehand, right?
Jody: If I said that, sure. It was probably the - oh, I have this - Um, what do you call it, it helps you, uh it helps you go to sleep...
Gwen: Like a, like a pill?
Jody: No, no, not... Marty doesn't want me to take all that chemical stuff. A few months ago, he got me something to take instead that's, uh... That Gundy girl sells it at her shop. You know, the one Joey used to, to um -
Gwen: Sam?
Jody: Her. Ugh, I can't remember the name. They have ads for it in The Lantern all the time 'cause I guess, I guess nobody wants to guy it. (laughs) I know it's better for you, but boy oh boy, that stuff is foul.
Gwen: What do you mean?
Jody: You ever had it? The taste is just awful. I can - oh my goodness, I can barely get a half a glass down. So, yes, anyway, I'm sure that's what I took. Yes, I know it is.
Gwen: How's that?
Jody: They were testing the fireworks for the festival, you know, that night. I get jumpy. (laughs) Just a little antsy sometimes. So I took that stuff and went to bed before they started. I slept like a baby.
[The water starts to boil.]
Jody: Oh, I told you that kettle was fast (laughs).
Gwen: So you don't remember anything after you went to bed that night?
Jody: Uh, this doesn't feel healthy, Gwen, you killing yourself, you know, to account for every single second of - Although, although you know, I'm - I'm happy -
Gwen: I just wanted to make sure the report was right, you know, while I'm here -
Jody (abruptly): You know what? I have something for you.
[Shuffling as Jody moves out of the room.]
Gwen (calling after Jody, nervous): Oh, that's fine, I - I was about to leave.
Jody (reentering space): Just a minute now, this, this is for you.
Gwen: Uh... thank you, I don't -
Jody: This is one of my favorites, and Beth liked it too. Sometimes, after dinner, when she wasn't talking (slightly mocking tone) business with Marty, her and I would - would look at my collection, and she always commented on this one.
Gwen: Oh, Jody, that's very sweet, but -
Jody: In the fairy tale, you know, mermaids always seem dangerous, luring ships to crash on rocky shores and so on. But I like to think maybe they were just trying to warn them. Being nice. Trying to get them to change course.
Gwen (begins reaching for her phone in her pocket): I'm not sure what to say, thank you very much, uh-
[Rustling as Gwen fumbles with her phone.]
Jody (interrupting, a little snooty): You know, you don't have to be messing with your phone every second of the day. The whole world -
[Recording abruptly cuts out.]
Jordan Pocket Interview
[6.2 EXT. STREET - DAY]
[Gwen is recording Jordan on her phone, which is hidden in her pocket. The recording picks up mid-conversation.]
[There is shuffling in Gwen's pocket.]
Jordan: -in a rush. Sorry.
[A car door opens and keys jangle.]
Gwen: Please. I - So, I - I really could use your help.
[Jordan closes the car door.]
Jordan: Thirty seconds. That's it.
Gwen: It's, uh- okay, it's about the hotel.
Jordan: Sure.
Gwen: Well, so, we have been having some trouble, and I just -
Jordan: Specifics.
Gwen: Well, we can't seem to get any business in the off-season because, well -
Jordan (insincere): No kidding.
Gwen: So, yeah. It's awful. We're really just treading water, really just, you know, barely treading water and I -
Jordan: You know I charge $600 an hour for consulting, right?
[Jordan's phone rings (Ringtone 1/Zoe).]
Jordan: Hang on. (on the phone, to Zoe) Hello? (beat) Stop right there. Sweetheart, if you're calling to tell me that your babysitter canceled yet again, you'd better hang up the phone right now. Okay - Okay, okay, stop talking. Here's the deal. Either find someone to cover you, or you give that kid a juice box, lock the doors, and cross your fingers, because you're coming in tonight. Okay? (beat) No, no we're - we're done now. (hangs up, to Gwen) So... something, something, your business.
Gwen: What?
Jordan: The hotel. I don't have a lot of time.
Gwen: I don't need you to do much. Just - well, just a favor. Just - Look, I uh, I know you're in - I know you're in the Navigators Club, and I thought that maybe, we -
Jordan: Maybe what?
Gwen: Oh (laughs) well, you know, if somebody like you were to bring up the hotel at the next meeting or... I - we're a community and -
Jordan: Why?
Gwen: Like I said, as a favor. I mean, I guess I could - You - Know what, I could even go with you, ask everyone for help and -
Jordan: Why do you want to go to the club? (beat) Ah. (chuckles) Got it. This isn't really about the hotel, is it?
Gwen: What?
Jordan: Of course. Mm. I heard you were going around digging up stuff about the Nav. Sad you can't join?
Gwen: That's not -
Jordan: So what?
Gwen: I am just - look -
Jordan: (knee-jerk reaction): What? You looking into me still?
Gwen: No, I - No, I'm just, I'm trying -
Jordan: You're wasting your time. I didn't like that sister of yours, but I certainly didn't do anything about it. She fell off a cliff. No offense.
Gwen: Whoa -
Jordan: I already told you I was busy that night.
Gwen: I checked The Rock Lounge. Nobody remembers you being there.
Jordan: Because they're all so trustworthy and reliable, right?
[Jordan's phone rings (Ringtone 2/Martin).]
Jordan (answering): Hey, Marty. (sarcastic) Yeah, thanks for the heads-up. (secretly referring to Gwen) No. No, I handled it. Or I will, anyway. All right. (hangs up, to Gwen) Listen, Gwen, I have no idea what to tell you. To be honest, I was - (laughs) All right, look, look, I was three sheets to the wind that night. And so, unfortunately, I don't really know where I was, but then again, neither do you.
[Jordan's phone rings (Ringtone 3/Eddy Blue).]
Jordan (over the sound): So where does that leave us, detective? (picking up) EB! Sorry, sorry, sorry. Uh - yeah, one second. (to Gwen) You know, this has been fun, Gwen. Long story short, nobody gets tourists in the off-season. Give your staff a pay cut if you don't want to fold. You're welcome, and I'll send you my bill.
[Jordan opens and then slams the car door.]
Gwen: Jordan!
[Engine starts. Recording ends abruptly.]
Martin Pocket Interview
[6.1 INT. MARTIN'S STUDY - DAY]
[Gwen is recording Martin on her phone, which is hidden in her pocket. The recording picks up mid-conversation.]
[There is shuffling in Gwen's pocket.]
Martin: We're in a tough situation here, but that's no excuse. The Ferrises and Hendrickses go way back. Why don't we just agree to disagree about Ruby, huh? Let's not spoil a 300-year-old relationship.
Gwen: Well, actually - so, I uh - I talked to Jody. Well, and I told her - is, uh, she here? Is she home?
Martin: No, bridge. Or maybe it's canasta today.
Gwen: Oh, well, I just, I'd like to see Ruby more. I know you want her to live with you, so I'm not saying - Really, I just - I just want to spend some time with her. So, you know, if - if -
Martin (delightful): Of course, of course.
Gwen: Of course?
Martin: You're her aunt. Of course you can see her more.
Gwen: Just so you know, Jody wasn't -
Martin: Leave Jody to me. She'll come around. She always does.
Gwen: I don't know, I -
Martin (ignoring Gwen, triumphant): Another crisis averted. Anything else I can do for you while you're here?
Gwen: Are you -
Martin: How's the pool?
Gwen: Oh, uh. Fine. Although, uh -
Martin: I can stop by tonight if you need anything.
Gwen: Oh, it's - it's been working fine. It's just, I uh - I don't know. I've been meaning to ask you... Tell me again: what was wrong with it?
Martin (laughs): It's hard to say. Those pipes are old. They were old when you bought the place, and they're old now. What did the insurance company say?
Gwen: Oh, they - We've been going back and forth a lot. Gosh, you know it's - it's taking forever -
Martin: These things do. I'm sure it'll all work out.
Gwen: Right, right, but I mean - what did you see when you went into the pump room that night?
Martin: It's hard to notice specifics when you're waist-deep in water, right? But patching up that leak - that was no picnic, I can tell you that. Anyway, I'm glad it stuck.
Gwen: Oh - yeah, yeah thanks, thanks, you really saved me.
Martin: Happy to help.
Gwen: (beat) This is, uh, wow (laughs). This is quite the set-up you have got here.
Martin: I'll have to tell Jody you like it. Because she always makes fun. She calls it my cave.
Gwen: It's nicer than a cave.
Martin: She says it looks like, um - oh, what does she always say, uh - Oh, it's like the Navigators Club convention in here.
Gwen: You seem pretty proud.
Martin: Thirteenth generation of Hendrickses on the island. That's no small feat.
[Gwen stirs in her chair.]
Gwen: Don't you think it's kind of old-fashioned?
Martin: What?
Gwen: All of it. I mean, just... all of it. The Navigators Club.
Martin: That's, uh - that's surprising to hear from a Ferris.
Gwen: But - well, how do - I mean, okay, what do you even do at the meetings? I've - I've never been.
Martin: They'd bore you to tears. But, you know, hey, I'm glad you're interested. Our younger members don't, uh, like, let's say, find it all that exciting. That's probably why they never show up at the meetings.
Gwen: So... well, if the numbers are bad, why don't you just let more people in?
[The front door of the house closes in the distance. A faint voice can be heard.]
Jody (yelling from a distance): Home early, Martin.
Martin (jokingly, whispers): The siren calls. I'll head her off, you go out the back. I'll take care of the Ruby business, Gwen. Okay?
Gwen: Um... uh, okay.
Martin (calling out to Jody, winking at Gwen): Coming, dear)
[Recording ends abruptly.]
Ruby's Report
70% C-
Ruby,
30% off for late work. This would have been a perfect score. Can we please discuss after class?
Ms. Roberts
When Orion died, he ascended to the stars,
Because that's where heroes go.
Well, you were a hero, too,
But you did not ascend.
They found your body on the beach,
No gods or monsters beside you,
Just the trash the tourists left behind,
Here on this miserable island.
And that was that.
I wish what didn't kill me made me stronger.
Because if it did,
I'd use my strength to rip Orion down
And pull you up,
My saintly mother,
To your true and rightful place.
And one day, when my time came,
We'd stand together in the sky.
As the old men say to themselves
When the unthinkable happens,
Ad astra per aspera.
Solution
- Beth Ferris-Hendricks was trying to build a bridge from Mallory Rock to the mainland. Beth's father-in-law, Martin Hendricks, did not want the new bridge to be built, and he did not want the details Beth had discovered about the bridge tragedy years ago to come to light.
- The Navigators Club vote record (Episode 4) and Clarence's coded note (Episode 4) reveal Martin's attempts to stack the Town Council votes against Beth's bridge proposal. Martin's resistance to a new bridge can be attributed to his need to maintain economic and political control over the island, but it is also evident that Martin was aware of the inconsistencies between the bridge review (Episode 5) and the geological survey (Episode 6) that led to the failed bridge construction years ago. It is also important to note that Martin financially benefited from the failed bridge, as seen in the JWE accounting screenshot found in Beth's CORA folder in her KeepSafe account (Episode 4).
- The second page of Beth's bridge proposal (Episode 4), which did not make it to the Town Council, implicated Anchor Management as the company that caused the bridge tragedy. Anchor Management's business registration (Episode 5) features a business address of 649 Summer Street and is registered to an individual named Rowan J. Droadod. 649 Summer Street is a property owned by Jordan Woodard, as seen on the JWE website (Episode 3). Rowan J. Droadod is an anagram pseudonym used by Jordan Woodard.
- Martin Hendricks gave his wife, Jody Hendricks, a high dose of TerraDorm concentrate (Episodes 1 and 6) to disrupt her concept of time and memory the night Martin killed Beth.
- Martin's alibi is uncorroborated, as Jody admits to being asleep. Martin's self-reported timeline is proven false by Jody, as she reports not hearing the fireworks before falling asleep, meaning she was asleep before 9:00 PM. Jody had claimed that Martin left the house before she fell asleep, at 9:30 PM.
- Martin left his home before 9:00 PM and went to the Vanishing Beach. Knowing he'd need an alibi, he called Jordan Woodard and orchestrated the pump room leak at the Mariner's Lodge Hotel. After killing Beth, Martin arrived at the Mariner's Lodge Hotel as if he was on his way to meet Joey.
- The hotel pool video shot by Gwen's employee the night Beth was murdered features a unique cell phone ringtone in the background. This same ringtone can be identified as Jordan's special ringtone for Martin heard during Gwen's recorded conversation with Jordan (Episode 6).
- Martin used a loose sign board to hit Beth on the head from behind. Then Martin walked Beth's body out int other ocean to be taken by the tide.
- The autopsy (Episode 2) reveals the dimensions of the head wound found on Beth: 1.27 centimeters high by 3.81 centimeters wide. This description of a square wound is consistent with the dimensions of a missing 2x4 board that was part of a sign at the Vanishing Beach detailed in a Good Fences Monthly Digest post (Episode 3). The missing board from this sign can be seen in the photo of Martin's study (Episode 6).
- To complete this episode, open the Contact shortcut and send a new message to Gwen with the subject line SOLVED. In the body of the message, type Martin Hendricks.
