Case 7.1.4: Labyrinth

1

Mitch threatened Rich with death... he literally said, "I'm going to kill you!". It was probably just out of anger... but still.

I'm going to go to talk to Mitch again. With all of this new information, I should be able to pressure him quite a bit.

I need to have a chat with Mitch Reese...

2

*Drive to Mitch's apartment*

The drive isn't very long, I should be there in a few minutes.

*Buzz Mitch's apartment number*

An imperfect, scratchy voice replies, "Hello?"

Jonathan: Hi Mitch, it's Investigator Josh Jordan.

Mitch: Oh, hi. You wanna talk again?

Jonathan: If you have time to chat, that would be awesome.

Mitch: I don't have too much time, but we can talk.

Jonathan: Awesome, thanks for your cooperation.

*The apartment door beeps and unlocks*

Jonathan: Mitch, there's an issue.

Mitch: Like what?

Jonathan: I know what you did to Rich at the party.

Mitch: Ah, I see. Well, that dude had it coming... he was kind of a bully.

Jonathan: Mitch, you said you were going to kill Rich.

Mitch: That was totally just in the moment, I didn't actually mean it.

Jonathan: But you understand how this looks, right?

Mitch: Wait, do you think I had something to do with Rich's disappearance?

Jonathan: You're my prime suspect in the Rich Rivera missing person case.

Mitch: Dude, I liked Rich... Up until he started being super annoying and stuff.

Jonathan: Both you and Rich were dating the same girl... and you're hiding it still.

Mitch: Jesus, who are you...? How do you know all of this?

Jonathan: I'm Jonathan Steel, and I know everything about you, so you better tell me now. Did you kill Rich?

Mitch: No! For the last time, I didn't. Go find out who did.

Jonathan: You're going to have to supply me with something other than "I didn't do it."

Mitch: Oh, wait, of course. Look, I was on vacation that week, I'll show you.

Mitch has credit card receipts from drinks he bought on the plane. Is he actually not guilty...? Although, this doesn't actually prove that he was physically there, it only proves his card was on the plane.

5

He says he boarded on April 4th, and that matches with his documents and emails.

6

There are 32 pictures, and the file details also match with Mitch's statement of being in Mexico, but I do know file details can be altered with software.

7

I suppose the police probably looked at Mitch as a suspect already... and removed him from their suspect pool probably due to this exact vacation.

Jonathan: I suppose this is convincing...

Mitch: Yes, thank you. I really do want to help you, but I didn't do anything wrong.

Jonathan: Technically, this doesn't prove you took the flight.

Mitch: What do you mean?

Jonathan: There are many ways to fake all of this.

Mitch: I don't get it... I have pictures there and a timestamped receipt.

Jonathan: I trust you. Can you tell me about a man named Connor?

Mitch: Connor, wasn't that Rich's friend? That guy was... weird.

Jonathan: Connor was weird? Weird in what way?

Mitch: He was inviting people to weird places and stuff.

Jonathan: Where did you see him?

Mitch: I saw him at college parties, I guess he just seemed sketchy.

Jonathan: Okay, thank you. If I find out you weren't on vacation, I'm calling the police immediately.

Mitch: I was in Mexico. I promise.

Jonathan: Take care now.

Mitch: Oh, wait, also, talk to Emma. She knows Connor, I think.
