Episode 1

Hints

Letter from Felix

  • In this letter, Felix informs you that he suspects Jasper may be interfering with the LFoA facility in Bozeman, and tasks you with figuring out what Jasper is up to in the next six months. He points you toward the archives on the LFoA website, which may reveal important information.

Letter from Jasper

  • Jasper's first letter provides insight into his early life and his time in the LFoA facility. It is worth noting that the typewriter he uses is missing the keys J and Z. In his final paragraph, he includes a code using 12-hour clock times.

Letter from Sylvia

  • This letter from Jasper's friend Sylvia includes a coded message in the border. The postscript of the letter suggests how to decipher the code.

Listening Friends of America Letter

  • This letter introduces a new Listening Friends of America facility in Bozeman, Montana, and a new inspector, Meg Gibson.

Newspaper Clipping

  • This article details a murder at the American Computer and Robotics Museum, where a body was discovered dismembered with its chest "excavated". Since this clipping was included in Jasper's file, it is likely the crime Jasper was convicted of.

Patient File

  • This file includes Jasper's intake assessment forms, correspondence about Jasper between LFoA staff, and a letter from Jasper himself to LFoA staff. It should provide insight into Jasper's criminal history, his mental state at the time of his admission, and how he has occupied himself since arriving in Bozeman.

Pocket Watch

  • This is an appropriate gift from a new Friend with a preoccupation with time and horology. It may be useful in deciphering one of the codes.

Thaumatrope

  • When assembled and operated according to Jasper's instructions, this optical toy reveals a message that may be useful.

Vault Print

  • A black-and-white multiple-exposure photograph of a man pole vaulting, "Pole Vault" by Thomas Eakins. Looking up the original image may reveal an important difference that will be relevant elsewhere.

Reveals

Letter from Jasper

  • Jasper's letter uses 12-hour clock times to encode a message. Each letter of the alphabet (excluding J and Z) corresponds to a quarter hour on the clock (A = 12:00, B = 12:15, etc.). When deciphered, the message reads: "I TOOK MANNY APART LIKE HUMPTY DUMPTY BUT NEXT TIME I WILL FIND A WAY TO BEST THE KINGS MEN".

Letter from Sylvia

  • The cipher in the border of the message can be decoded using the hint in the postscript, with each set of letters and numbers standing in for a letter. Sets beginning with G should be shifted forward from A the given number of spaces, while sets beginning with S should be shifted back beginning with Z (EX: S13 = N). The code's starting point is G8, which is located in the center of the top border. When decoded, the message reads: "HANG IN THERE JUST A LITTLE LONGER".

Thaumatrope

  • When you spin the thaumatrope, the word "TEETH" is visible, which is the title of one of the links on the hidden LFoA archive page. This document, however, is password-protected.

Vault Print

  • The word "Vault" has been added to the original image by Thomas Eakins. This is the password to the "Teeth" PDF linked in the hidden LFoA archive page. There are words hidden within the code that may be useful in the future.
